2022.05.17.

CraftHack, the largest international hackathon programming and development team competition in Central Europe, was hosted in Budapest this year from 6 to 8 May. Several teams entered the hybrid competition from Pázmány ITK, from whom the Run4YourLife team won the grand prize with their winning application submitted to the challenge by Varian.

About the competition
CraftHack is Central Europe's largest international hackathon programming and development team competition, hosted this year in Budapest from 6 to 8 May.
Several teams from Pázmány ITK participated in this compatition, that was organized hybrid format.

The special feature of hackathons, including CraftHack, is that they require a relatively large, interesting problem to be solved in a short time by building a working prototype and demonstrating that the idea or solution works.

At this year's CraftHack, solutions could be submitted to a problem (challenge) defined in collaboration with the three sponsoring companies (Antavo, TIER and Varian), with individual prizes of €1500-2000, and a grand prize of €3000 for the best solution of the whole competition.

The challenge was to create and present a working application/website/software that met the companies' specifications and fitted their profile.
In addition to the innovative approach to the challenges, the judges also assessed the expected impact and usability of the solution, with different weightings.

The Run4YourLife team of Pázmány ITK students - Dániel István Németh, Levente Bolyki, Kinga Juhász, Mátyás Balázs, Ferenc Borsi - won not only the Varian challenge prize but also the CraftHack grand prize with their solution, submitted for the Varian challenge.

The winning project

The Varian challenge required participants to develop a solution that helps people fight cancer by detecting or preventing cancer early.
The team members were free to choose the idea, the target age group and the built-in features, and they created an Android app (Run4YourLife) that aims to reduce the risk of developing cancer by using a specific app to motivate and help people to lead a healthier lifestyle.
When recommending sports activities, the app takes into account the air pollution in the user's environment, UV radiation levels and public transport routes in Budapest, so that the user can even race the bus in addition to the time. ;)

Personal experiences

A member of the winning team, Levente Bolyki, commented on the results:
"The challenge had no technological constraints, but we had to really dig deep into the challenge to implement the ideas we had. At the same time, it is important that we had already been exposed to all the necessary technologies in some form or other in university courses. For example, JAVA, database management, REST API, design pattern, android location. In fact, there were parts that we could copy from the previously written assignments. Three members of our team have just experienced the beauty of Android application development for the first time, they were clearly motivated by the competition and want to continue exploring the subject in their respective university courses."
