The Faculty of Information Technology and Bionics (ITK) of Pázmány Péter Catholic University successfully expanded its international network during a high-profile visit to São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in September 2025. Over four days, the Faculty’s representatives engaged with students, universities, and research institutions at the LATAM Fair higher education exhibitions across three venues in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

Delegation members Dr. István Reguly, Vice-Dean for International Relations, and Ágnes Csimma, International Coordinator, combined exhibition presence with targeted meetings at four major Brazilian universities and a leading research hospital, laying the groundwork for new educational and research collaborations.

Strong Interest in Master’s and Doctoral Programmes

The Pázmány booth attracted around 150 prospective students throughout the events in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. It is particularly noteworthy that many visitors expressed specific interest in Master’s and PhD programmes, demonstrating the growing international recognition of Hungarian higher education and of ITK’s English-taught programmes in particular.

University Visits Open Doors to Collaboration

Beyond the fairs, the delegation also visited four prominent Brazilian universities, including a Catholic institution, similar in profile to Pázmány. The meetings revealed mutual interest in potential educational and research collaborations, such as the development of joint doctoral programmes, student and staff mobility schemes, and the preparation of joint research projects. Research topics showing the greatest promise include data and computational sciences, machine learning, systems modelling, biotechnology, and medical informatics. The discussions also touched upon the possibility of short-term study visits within the framework of the Stipendium Hungaricum Programme, which could enable Brazilian students to spend a few months at ITK – opening up a new and flexible form of cooperation.

From Discussions to Research Cooperation

The delegation also visited a renowned research hospital, where initial discussions outlined the basis for potential joint research projects, particularly in the interdisciplinary areas connecting biotechnology and medical informatics.

Reinforcing ITK’s International Presence

The visit to Brazil clearly demonstrates that the academic and research portfolio of Pázmány ITK attracts significant international interest. The newly established contacts and proposed agreements are expected to lead to new collaborations, joint research initiatives, and student mobility opportunities, further strengthening the Faculty’s position within the global higher education landscape.
