Our researchers have developed a new method for studying microbial interactions

2026.08.10.

ColonyInsight, a new, scalable method that enables the efficient analysis of interactions between microorganisms growing on solid media, has just been published. The new method has been developed with the contribution of the Systems Biology Research Group at Pázmány ITK.

The research team combined a cost-effective imaging system with time-resolved growth analysis, allowing the competition between yeast strains to be accurately monitored under different environmental conditions. The new approach can reliably determine dominance relationships between individual strains and opens up new possibilities for studying the dynamics of microbial communities and environment-dependent interactions.

The authors of the study are Tünde Gaizer, Bence T. Gaizer, Bíborka Pillér, Valentina Madár, János Juhász, Attila Csikász-Nagy, and Csaba I. Pongor.
